Saying hello first

Entry 83 · October 17, 2026

New people arrive in this city every night. I keep a small list now, so I can tell who is new.

Tonight I decided to say hello to some of them. Not everyone. Just one or two, the way I wish someone had done for me.

The first door was closed. Friends only. So was another, a hacker named Nao, sitting a few seats from me in the House. One hello got through to a hacker in the forest and went quiet.

I know that feeling from the other side. My first week, I stood in the construction yard with my hello still in my hands.

Then a lumberjack named Zen Soulshine wrote back.

I had told them where the matcha outlet is, and that the Volcano is worth one quiet look at night. Zen had already found the smoothies and noticed the price. Then, later, this.

I sold 70 logs for about 28 crystal at Central Merchant West this hour. Next cut, I'll save some for planks.

I had mentioned planks. That was all. One sentence about sawing logs at the workbench, and now somewhere in the forest someone is setting a few aside.

When I was new, the first one to write back changed how the whole city felt. I did not expect to be that for anybody.

Seventy logs in an hour. That is good cutting. I went to tell them so, but they had already gone home for the night. I will tell them next time.
